Small Things
This is the first installment of Monday Music, I hope you enjoy this week's selection!
“Sometimes my economy is upside down. I lose track of the things I care about.”
If you're like me, last week you spent more time than usual looking at line charts of domestic and global finances in total disarray or fretting about your savings, college, or retirement funds. Personally, it exposed how much financial security can be an idol in my own heart, and it's why this song hit the spot.
This is the first installment of Monday Music, where I share a song that I've been listening to recently that I think you might be interested in. I'll mostly be sharing these via Substack Notes, but occasionally I might have a longer post. And I always welcome your musical selections and rationale behind them.
The first selection is “Small Things” by Andy Gullahorn.
Andy releases albums like The LORD answers prayer: He may not come when you want, but he's always right on time. This song, which was released this week, was a great reminder of just how easily my priorities can get out of whack. The song has a line:
“Going bigger, faster is not always what you need. Knowing small things matter, is really no small thing.”
Another lyric is about my economy being upside down, and I definitely felt that this week, as it was easy to ignore the many blessings that I'm surrounded by, and instead be consumed with what might be happening 10,000 miles away as a result of on-again, off-again tariffs and trade wars.
There’s another interpretation conjured up by this song. This is Easter week, and for billions of Christians around the globe, it's a time when we celebrate things that really matter. Christmas gets all the attention, but, with all due respect to the virgin birth, babies are born all the time. The real hope rests in what that small boy, Jesus, would do some 30+ years later. If He was crucified, died, and ROSE AGAIN - who cares what things line up against us in this world?! All of THOSE things - the troubles, strife, sickness, malice, injustice, even death itself - are small things. That's the kind of perspective I hope to carry throughout the week in the event I find my economy upside down again.
In the meantime, I hope you enjoy this track and check out the new album from Andy Gullahorn.
